Paula Reason

Paula Reason’s elegant embroidered line drawings have a graphic, architectural simplicity. They describe spatial relationships and represent information with a literal, straightforward visual language. Fine lines of thread delineate the details of her source. Part of their appeal is this directness, but their poetry arises from the close attention that she gives to the minutia of her subject’s creative lives, reflected in the spaces that they shape around themselves.

ARCHITECT | ARTIST

By recording and paying attention to the details of where people live and work, a favourite chair, a book or even a discarded sweet wrapper, I create portraits in textiles through the spaces that they inhabit. I start by recording the space and its contents using my experience of many years as a practicing architect. These drawings are then interpreted and refined to present an interpretation of the occupant(s). This is done in conjunction with interviews and research to build up the story of the lives lived in their surroundings. These drawings evolve into stitched, sometimes three-dimensional, silk panels.
